New Health Services Project Focuses On Health Care Access

24 February 2025

Leeton is one of five locations in NSW chosen for an exciting new initiative that aims to reshape the way health services are delivered in our community.

The Collaborative Care project facilitated by Rural Doctors Network (RDN) is designed to identify the health care needs of the Leeton community and work together to create innovative solutions. This collaborative approach will bring together health professionals, community members, Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD), Murrumbidgee Primary Health Network (MPHN), and Leeton Shire Council to design a future-focused health service model.

Building on existing research and community consultation, local healthcare providers, including doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals, will share insights into the challenges they face and the support they need to serve Leeton effectively.

The goal is to ensure every resident in Leeton can access the care they need and that health care providers have sustainable solutions to ongoing challenges. The project is dedicated to fostering a holistic approach to health, with a strong focus on mental, physical, and social wellbeing for all members of the Leeton community.

Leeton Shire Mayor, George Weston, welcomed the opportunity to improve local health services and collaboration.

“We thank the NSW Government for their investment in the project and are delighted to have RDN facilitating the process,” Cr Weston said.

“Our most recent community survey reiterated the importance of health services to Leeton Shire residents and the Collaborative Care project provides a welcome opportunity to work together with key stakeholders - including the MPHN and MLHD - to consider any service or access gaps and how they can be closed.”

Maryann Iannelli is the Community Project Officer for the Collaborative Care project. Ms Iannelli believes the project has the potential to address important health care needs in Leeton.

“We are incredibly excited about the potential this project has to improve access to health care for everyone in Leeton,” Ms Iannelli said.

“By working together, the project will identify sustainable solutions that aim to improve access to care, reduce wait times, and provide a more integrated health service experience for all.”

Leeton residents will soon be invited to participate in a health services survey to help guide the direction of the project. For more information on the Collaborative Care Project contact Maryann Iannelli at miannelli@nswrdn.com.au.
