How a therapy dog is making school days a little easier

The Collaborative Care Small Grants Program is supporting local organisations to strengthen community connections and improve health and wellbeing across Eden.
One of the successful projects is bringing a therapy dog into a local school to help students feel calmer, more connected and supported.
We spoke with Eden High School to learn what inspired the project and the difference it's making for students and staff.
Can you tell us a little about your organisation and the project that received funding through the Eden Small Grants program?
Our school is committed to supporting the mental health and wellbeing of students and staff. Thanks to the generous support of the Eden Small Grants program, we were able to have a support therapy dog in our school environment. This project aims to provide emotional support, reduce stress, and promote a calm and inclusive atmosphere for students, staff, and families.
What inspired this project, and what community need were you hoping to address?
The inspiration came from recognising that many young people face challenges with anxiety, stress, and social isolation. We wanted to create a gentle, non-judgemental source of comfort and companionship that could help students feel more connected and supported. The therapy dog is a wonderful way to respond to these needs by promoting positive mental health and social interaction within the school community.
How has the grant helped you bring this project to life?
The grant was absolutely vital in getting this project off the ground. It allowed us to cover initial costs such as training, certification, and the resources needed to integrate the therapy dog safely and effectively into the school setting. Without this funding, it would have been very difficult to provide the necessary support and materials to launch the program successfully.
How has the project helped people connect with others, and what difference do you think that has made to their health and wellbeing?
Our therapy dog has become a heartwarming catalyst for connection. Students who might normally feel shy or anxious find it easier to engage with peers and staff when the dog is around. Simply patting or spending time with the dog can help students feel calmer and less stressed. This has fostered a stronger sense of community, belonging, and emotional resilience within our school.
Do you have a favourite story, moment, or piece of feedback that shows the difference this project has made?
One of our favourite moments has been seeing the excitement among students, especially those starting high school, when they learn we have a support therapy dog on site. Many students have shared that knowing the dog is here makes coming to school feel more welcoming and less stressful. For some, it’s a comforting presence during what can be a challenging transition. This enthusiasm shows us just how much having a support dog positively impacts the school environment and helps students feel more connected and supported from day one.
