Wee Waa comes together for NAIDOC Week Family Fun Day

29 July 2026

For many families in Wee Waa, the annual NAIDOC Week Family Fun Day is a chance to catch up, celebrate and enjoy time together. Hosted by the Wee Waa Local Aboriginal Lands Council (WWLALC), the event has become an important part of local NAIDOC Week celebrations.

Held on Friday 10 July at Dangar Park, the 2026 Family Fun Day saw families, Elders and community members gather for a day alive with activity. There was live music, good food, giveaways and plenty to keep everyone entertained during the school holidays.

The day also gave people the opportunity to meet local health services, with free health checks available throughout the event. It was an easy way to ask questions and learn more about services available in Wee Waa. Anyone who completed a free health check also went into the draw to win an IGA gift voucher.

For WWLALC, including health services as part of the Family Fun Day has become a meaningful way to support community wellbeing, making it easier for people to connect with local services while enjoying the day.

“Our NAIDOC Family Fun Day is an important celebration, a celebration for everyone,” WWLALC Chief Executive Officer, Robyn Keeffe told the Narribri Courier.

“We really promote togetherness; this is for the whole community. We’ve been doing it yearly, and we endeavour to have all the health services here, so that people can get their health checks."

The event was supported by RDN Health through the Wee Waa Collaborative Care Program, Narrabri and District Community Aid Service (NDCAS),, and Whitehaven Coal, with a range of local organisations taking part.

WWLALC Chair, Clifford Toomey, welcomed everyone to the event, with Narrabri Shire Mayor, Darrell Tiemens, also speaking. Community members Sheila Combo, Vida Dewson and Glenda Mason had the special job of cutting the cake.

As communities across Australia celebrated 50 years of NAIDOC Week, the Wee Waa Family Fun Day was a celebration of culture, community and belonging. It also provided a relaxed space to connect, learn more about local support and take steps towards living well and staying healthy.
